GameCo Performance Analysis

OVERVIEW

Motivation

GameCo, a video game development company, is looking for insights on how to allocate its budget for the upcoming year. This includes what games to make and where to focus selling efforts.

Objective

Analyze customer data to inform development and stocking of new games.

Scope

This analyses looks at video game sales data from 1980 to 2020 to make predictions about 2023 game sales.

RESULTS

Who’s the most profitable?

Europe (EU), North America (NA), and Japan (JP) generate the most sales revenue.

Majority of the budget should go to EU, followed by NA, and then JP.

Action, shooter, and sports are the most popular genres in EU and NA.

Miscellaneous, role-playing, and action are the most popular in Japan

What determines popularity?

Using the top performing countries, I looked for trends in popularity.

Japan has a popularity shift from role-playing to action in 2014.

I conducted a correlational study to see genre popularity was related to the quantity of games coming out. There was no correlation between the two.

Further investigation is needed to determine what makes a genre popular.

How much should we stock?

Finally, I calculated the average number a games sold in each genre to get a benchmark for upcoming inventory needs.

Despite having the most sales overall, games in other genres may sell better.

On average, there are only about 5 games made per each genre.

Average sales metric would be fine most games, but a different metric should be used for those in the most popular genres.
